“We’re demanding from our elected Councillors that the sealing of Rodney’s roads appear within Auckland Council’s top 10 projects in the 10 year budgets they are currently setting. Our people want $10 million dollars a year spent on sealing our roads for the next 10 years. This will tar seal at least a third of our currently unsealed very unsafe roads. The sealing of roads in Rodney is as important as the City Rail Link ($2.86 billion), New buses and ferries ($2.4 billion), city roading projects ($5.3 billion), the Manukau AMETI project ($1.1 billion), but will be a fraction of the cost at $100 million. Considering Rodney ratepayers will pay over $650 million in rates over the next 10 years, all we are asking for is a fair deal and for the basic core obligation to be able to drive on safe Council roads.” – Greg Sayers, Rodney Local Board member
Councillor Penny Webster
We need the vote of at least 11 of the 20 Councillors and the Mayor to be in favour of allocating $10 million dollars a year for the next 10 years towards sealing Rodney’s roads. We want our own Councillor to champion this with the other Councillor’s and the Mayor.
Key positions Mrs Webster holds;
Budget Committee: Chair: Len Brown, Deputy Chair: Penny Webster. This committee is responsible for developing the 10 year budgets. It is vital the road sealing money is added in by this committee to Auckland’s top 10 priorities, so it gets to be voted on by the governing body.
Governing Body: Chair: Len Brown, Member: Penny Webster. This committee has the power to approve the 10 year budget and the $10 million a year for 10 years. All the Councillors and the Mayor sit on this committee. This is the key committee which must approve the money!
Finance & Performance Committee: Chair: Penny Webster. This committee is responsible for monitoring Auckland Council’s overall financial management. It has the power to influence the sealing money to be increased to $100m.
Rural Advisory Panel: Chair: Bill Cashmore, Member: Penny Webster. This committee is responsible to communicate to the Council the interest and preferences of the rural-based industries and community of Auckland. Our preference is quite clear, so we expect our wishes to be pushed!
Mrs Webster can gain the help of other Councillors and the Mayor by lobbying them to vote in favour of sealing Rodney’s roads.
Where does the money come from? It is the responsibility of the governing body committee to identify what ratepayer money will be spent on Rodney’s roads.
The community is demanding a fair deal and for either $10 million of the $61 million we pay in local rates a year to be spent back on our roads (16% of our rates). Or the $10 million can come from the Council’s total annual income of $2.98 billion (ie: only 0.3% of Council’s total money), if they choose to vote that our unsealed roads are a regional health, safety and productivity issue.
Will our Councillor’s choose to seal Rodney’s roads because it is a basic Council service and the right thing to do to move away from having third world roading conditions in Rodney and towards the whole of Auckland becoming the world’s most liveable city? Or are they planning to leave us “out to dry”?

Rodney Local Board
The Rodney Local Board, which is elected to act as your voice to communicate your wishes to Council, has formally requested that the governing body (the Councillors and the Mayor) provides $10m per year for the next 10 years for seal extensions in Auckland.
If the governing body;
1. decides they want to vote on this (they may choose not too unless influenced to do so) and
2. approve (vote in) the funding, then Rodney would receive the vast majority of that money, as we have the most unsealed roads!

"Dusty corrugated, potholed and narrow winding unsealed roads are likely out-of-sight-out-of-mind for most of the residents of the Auckland Super City, except for a rare trip to one of our Regional parks, yet they can be a daily source of misery to the many rural ratepayers of Rodney who already receive precious little for their rates. Having a constantly dirty car can mean being ticketed for having an illegible number plate when parked in town, arriving in dirty clothes to appointments or special occasions from merely brushing against the dirty car door, and always carrying two pairs of shoes or a pair of gumboots to change in and out of. Car washing is of course futile because the car is dirty again within minutes of driving and lime-splash causes premature deterioration of the paintwork, and rusting.
For the resident, roadside dust infiltrates the entire house and requires constant cleaning, and is a significant health hazard. Computers, laptops, printers and other electronic equipment rapidly become dust-laden, affecting performance and shortening their life span. This alone could add up to thousands of dollars-worth of damage to just one household over the course of a decade.
It’s time for Auckland Council to wake up and open their eyes and ears to the rural residents of Rodney."

"Rodney is rapidly turning into a ‘playground’ for the growing population on Auckland and it also starting to see population growth of its own with thousands of houses poised to be developed in Kumeu.
All this is putting increased pressure on the transport infrastructure in Rodney whether it is poorly maintained sealed roads, unsealed roads, lack of footpaths in our growing urban towns or non-existent public transport.
With 46% of the landmass of Auckland but a fraction of the transport spend there is every reason for residents to be as frustrated as they are about the lack of investment.
I support the push for $10 million a year for transport projects in Rodney, if it’s good enough to spend $2.8 billion on a Central Rail Link in the city, it’s good enough to invest $10 million in maintaining the transport infrastructure in Auckland’s playground!"
